How important is a pillow?

After the mattress, the pillow is the most important item you have in your sleep environment. The key to a great night's sleep is great spinal alignment. Your pillow determines the spinal alignment of your neck and shoulders. If you do not have the right pillow you will be more prone to wake up because of a stiff neck.

Also, the wrong pillow will prevent your throat from having a clear passage of air, which increases the risk of snoring, disturbing both your sleep, and if you sleep with a partner, you will disturb them.

Do I need to change my pillow? Take the Pillow Test

Place your pillow on a flat surface and fold it in half. Now place a sports shoe on top. If the shoe doesn’t fly off as the pillow springs back to shape then your pillow is dead and should be replaced. If the shoe is moved off the pillow then your pillow is alive and continuing to give you good support.

Choosing the right pillow

If you’re looking for a new pillow, the first step is to think about the way you sleep. Do you sleep on your stomach, back or side? This is your sleeping style, which helps determine the height of the pillow that best suits your needs. The height is very important, as this supports your head and neck while you sleep.

You should always choose the right height of pillow so that your neck and head get maximum support. The next step is to find one that ‘feels’ comfortable. Pillows are available in soft, medium-firm and firm. The choice of pillow ‘feel’ is purely personal.
